Classic Quinta near Lagos
Self-catering holiday rental villa with seaview, pool area, privacy
A traditional quinta in the hills near Lagos, Western Algarve, Portugal
The Marina de Lagos is one of the best in the Algarve, and it is the port of departure for blue water ocean voyages - to Madeira, the Azores, Morocco, the Canary Islands, and all crossings of the Atlantic. It is the last continental port of call of the fabled ARC convoy, usually setting out in early November for the trip to Brazil and the Caribbean. Lagos of course also was the last port of call, or indeed the home port, of all the famous Portuguese explorers, like Henry the Navigator, Magelhaes, Vasco da Gama and many others. Sailing out of here can make you feel like a bit of an explorer yourself, especially by the time you get to the land's end point of Sagres, where the swell gets serious and there is nothing ahead but thousands of miles of water. What makes this a great marina as well, is that the Bay of Lagos, especially in summer, has great winds nearly every afternoon, usually starting to blow at twelve sharp. The marina has all the usual facilities, many of them top notch, a great sailors' bar for all your tall yarns and up to date info. There are several charter companies, offering both motor and sailing yachts, there is sailing instruction up to Yacht Master level and beyond, and there are several excellent restaurants.
