Classic Quinta near Lagos

Self-catering holiday rental villa with seaview, pool area, privacy

A traditional quinta in the hills near Lagos, Western Algarve, Portugal

Our nearest beach, Meia Praia is an almost 5 km long crescent of golden sand. One of the nicest in Europe, if only because it never gets crowded. This shot was taken on a weekday in early June, at about 9:30 in the morning. The photographer was not alone at the beach. If you look very closely, you can see two tiny specks at the far end, that are almost certainly people. In the high season of course there are many more people, most of them on the section nearest the town and in front of the beach restaurants. The eastern half is always very quiet. The far end is so quiet that it attracts naturists, and serves as an unofficial nudist beach. No need to take anything off though, it is all very casual. Dog lovers also favour this section. Walking westward (as in this image) you have a lovely view of Lagos and Ponte de Piedade, walking east gives views of Alvor. When you cross the dunes at the far end you come to the lagoon, with great views towards the Monchique and the village of Mexilhoeira Grande straddling a low hill.
