A traditional quinta in the hills near Lagos, Western Algarve, Portugal
One of the nearby beaches, Porto de Mós, just West of Lagos, is about fifteen minutes away. It is a favorite of Portuguese tourists in summer, but on most days it is nearly or completely deserted - as on this beautiful day in early March. The cliffs in the distance form the justly famous Ponte da Piedade (Point of Grief), where in the 1600's women would stand and watch their men go out to sea on their journeys of discovery, many of which started from Lagos. Modern day women sometimes do the very same thing when their men sail their yachts out to Madeira, the Azores, or the other side of the Atlantic.
